Kalimantan
History

At
Kalimantan are recorded Palawaskrip inscriptions which is a metrical of
the Sanskrit langguage from about 400 A.D., and in known
history of the whole Archipelago of Indonesia, Kalimantan is the first
Island with a history. The first influance at Kalimantan was from
Indian settlers, who later had a great impact at other Islands in
Indonesia. In the 15th century, the Islamic relegion had a
great impact at parts of Kalimantan, as the coastal line and South
Kalimantan province, and embraced several kingdoms in the
island, as the Kutai and Banjar Sultanate Dynasty.
In the 17 century, the Dutch came to establish trading
agreements in the rich Kalimantan area and gained monopoly of the
diamonds gem-stones and oil trade, before the total control over
Kalimantan was a fact.
During
the second world war, the Japanese controlled several regions of
Kalimantan, where-under Tarakan as a startegic point of trade. Soon
after the war, the Dutch tried to regain there control over Kalimantan
Island, but failed soon after Indonesian Independence
integrated Kalimantan as a province of the Indonesian
Republic.
